Dental and Non-Dental Health Professionals

Only volunteers who have completed their hepatitis vaccination series will be allowed in areas of direct patient care or in areas of possible exposure to patient bodily fluids.

Dentists

Plan treatment in triage, provide treatment in oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, and pediatrics.

Dental Hygienists

Provide preventive treatments (i.e., prophylaxis, topical fluoride, sealants) and full mouth debridements, and also provide oral cancer screening and oral health instruction.

Dental Assistants

Assist in oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatrics, and sterilization.

Dental Students – University of Colorado (3rd & 4th Year, ISP)

Assist dentists across clinical departments.

Dental Students – University of Colorado (1st & 2nd Year)

Dependent on clinical experience, may be able to assist dentists; three-hour sterilization commitment.

Dental Hygiene Students

Provide patients with oral health instruction; three-hour sterilization commitment.

Dental Assisting Students

Dependent on clinical experience, may be able to assist dentists; three-hour sterilization commitment.

X-Ray Technicians

Provide patients with Panoramic and Nomad x-ray images.

Dental Lab Technicians

Prepare partial and full dentures.

Dental Supply Persons

Provide dental and nondental volunteers with supplies to enable them to perform their tasks efficiently.

Dental Equipment Maintenance Persons

Ensure the optimal operation of dental equipment.

Dental Coders

Code dental procedures performed by dentists and hygienists.

Medical Students

Participate in mentoring program with COMOM dentists.

Physicians, PAs, Nurses, and PA/Nursing Students

Review patients’ health history, and measure patients’ blood pressure and blood glucose levels (health triage).

EMTs/Paramedics

Be available onsite in case of a medical emergency; assist in health triage.

Pharmacists, Pharmacist Students, Pharmacy Techs

Dispense antibiotics and low-level pain medications as prescribed by dentists and oral surgeons.

Community Volunteers

Only volunteers who have completed their hepatitis vaccination series will be allowed in areas of direct patient care or in areas of possible exposure to patient bodily fluids.

Volunteer Check-in

Greet and check in volunteers.

Patient Escorts

Escort patients to and from the various clinic departments.

Interpreters

Assist patients by interpreting for them. Interpreters of all languages are needed. Individuals who are fluent in Spanish are of particular need. Individuals who are proficient in American Sign Language are also needed.

Patient Registration

Welcome patients to the clinic and assist them to complete clinic registration forms.

Patient Exit Interviews

Interview patients, gathering information about their pain status and the time frame of their most recent dental care, insurance status, demographic factors, and about their COMOM experience.

Data Entry

Computer enter information from patient treatment forms.

Food Service

Serve patients and volunteers, and provide support in the food service area.

Runners

Assist department leads as needed.

Willing Hands

Help with setting up the dental clinic, and the taking down and packing up of the
dental equipment and supplies at the close of the clinic.

Parking Management

Assist patients and volunteers as they park their cars, to smoothly, and without delay, have them arrive at the clinic.

Crowd Management

Ensure patients and volunteers have a comfortable and safe clinic experience.

Pre-clinic Community Outreach

Serve as “boots on the ground” promoting clinic awareness with individuals and organizations to ensure potential patients know about the COMOM no-cost dental clinic.
